Jeff Bowen

 

Jeff has been litigating and arbitrating complex insurance claims for some fourteen years, focusing on professional, directors and officers, and general liability insurance. Jeff graduated from Yale Law School and clerked for the Ninth and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeals. He spent the first four years of his private practice at Munger, Tolles & Olsen in Los Angeles, focusing on complex commercial litigation. Jeff co-chairs the firm’s professional lines practice.

Representative matters on which Jeff has been lead counsel or had a leadership role include insurance claims arising from: 

  • Lawsuits alleging a large asset manager channeled investors into inappropriate funds 
  • An SEC investigation and damages claims against a large asset manager
  • A mutual fund advisor’s conduct involving multiple investment funds 
  • Dozens of product liability, including and wrongful death, lawsuits against a manufacturer alleging injuries over the course of ten years 
  • PFAS and environmental liability lawsuits against a large manufacturer in a federal MDL  
  • Wrongful death lawsuits against a bankruptcy trustee by the estate of workers killed in an explosion  
  • Lawsuits alleging corporate waste against a hedge fund after an acquisition target entered bankruptcy 
  • “Bump up” claims following a go-private transaction by a large retail chain  
  • False Claims Act claims raised by an alleged whistleblower against a large contractor  
  • Alleged historical sexual abuse claims against certain religious institutions, including the institutions’ bankruptcy trustees 
  • A wrongful death claim against a manufacturer’s involving general and contractual indemnity coverage issues 
  • Overlapping claims by governmental entities and class action plaintiffs against an automobile manufacturer impacting multiple policy periods 
  • Alleged damage to stored embryos by a fertility clinic

Jeff’s general commercial litigation practice includes claims arising from:

  • A dispute between the purchaser and seller of an industrial manufacturer over the interpretation and application of an Asset Purchase Agreement Former  
  • Royalty and copyright disputes between a large television network its network partner 
  • A log home construction company’s copyright dispute with its competitor 
  • Media coverage claims by a professional sports team arising from its social media posts

      Jeff co-authored the Mutual Fund Litigation and Insurance Practice Guide, a Matthew Bender publication whose most recent edition is scheduled for publication 2024.

      Jeff has frequently presented and published on insurance and general litigation issues. He has served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of WisconsinMadison Law School for more than a decade. He served as the Insurance Committee Co-Chair at the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and ResolutionHis pro bono work primarily focuses on representing immigrants before agencies and courts.
